Manager attitude principle 7: Be Positive

The word ‘positive’ has over 20 meanings but in this case it is meant as being constructive and sure. Several of the meanings are listed below.

1. explicitly stated, stipulated, or expressed: a positive acceptance of the agreement.
2. admitting of no question: positive proof.
3. stated; express; emphatic: a positive denial.
4. confident in opinion or assertion; fully assured: He is positive that he will win the contest.
5. overconfident or dogmatic: The less he knows, the more positive he gets.

12. Philosophy.
– a. constructive and sure, rather than skeptical.
– b. concerned with or based on matters of experience: positive philosophy.

It is very easy and natural to counter negativism with negativism. Fight the proverbial fire with fire. Point is, comments are often perceived as being negative while not meant as such (the basics of communications, actually). Therefore, unless you are absolutely and utterly sure something is indeed meant as being negative/destructive, just assume the best and reply in a positive and constructive manner.

Being positive is not just a trick you learn, it is a philosophy, maybe even a way of life.
